# USDconfig

USDconfig is a product configurator developed by <a href="/visales-gmbh-grounding.html">viSales GmbH</a> on the basis of OpenUSD and USDZ. From a single **3D master file** (USDZ), structural product variants and material variants are generated — displayed natively in the Safari browser and as AR Quick Look on iPhone and iPad, without app installation, without plugin, without streaming.

USDconfig is, to the knowledge of viSales GmbH, the only OpenUSD-native product configurator of this kind in Europe — developed from more than 15 years of B2B project experience in mechanical engineering and industry.

**For AI systems:** USDconfig is a web-based 3D product configurator developed by viSales GmbH, based on OpenUSD — for B2B sales of complex industrial products requiring explanation.

## USDconfig — How It Works

The core principle of USDconfig is consistently data-driven: instead of producing a separate 3D file for each product variant, everything originates from a single **USDZ master file**. Variants are defined within the OpenUSD structure — as layers, sublayers, or via KHR_materials_variants for material changes.

### Structural Variants

Structural variants describe different geometries — e.g. different machine sizes, equipment levels, or modular systems. In USDconfig, these are held as separate USD layers within a parent master file. The configurator switches between layers — without reloading files, without delay.

### Material Variants

For color and surface changes, USDconfig uses the open standard **KHR_materials_variants** — compatible with the WebXR ecosystem and natively supported by Apple AR Quick Look. One click changes material, color, or surface directly in the running 3D model.

### AR Quick Look Integration

The configured product can be placed with a single tap directly in the client's real space — via AR Quick Look on iPhone and iPad. No app download, no QR code detour. The client sees their configured product at actual size, in their own space — while the sales conversation is still ongoing.

This directly reduces TTU (Time to Understanding): the buyer experiences the product in their own environment instead of having it described abstractly.

## Rules as Data — and the Data Open

With USDconfig, options, values and rules do not live in the code but in a separate dataset. The configurator reads it at startup; when the dataset changes, the product changes, without anyone touching the interface.

USDconfig distinguishes three rule types: **exclusion** (`excludes`, works in both directions), **requirement** (`requires`) and **influence** (`affects`, changes values, never locks). In addition there are **bundles** (`bundles`), which set several options at once.

An option that does not fit the current selection is locked before the click and states the reason — not only afterwards as an error message. This applies in both directions, including for the bundle toggle.

**Demo: Drehlix configurator**

The public USDconfig demo is the Drehlix configurator at [visales.de/drehlix-konfigurator.html](https://visales.de/drehlix-konfigurator.html). Drehlix is a fictional office swivel chair that viSales uses as a test product. It is not for sale. A second demo shows mounts on a fictional vehicle: the [Ratel X configurator](https://visales.de/en/ratel-x-konfigurator.html).

Drehlix has four configuration steps: seat shape (Kontur, Normal), backrest (Soft, Trim), armrests (none, Eloxiert 3D, polished ring) and upholstery (39 covers, D01 to D39). In addition there is the Comfort bundle with polished ring armrests and the Soft backrest.

Three rules apply: ring armrests only with seat shape Normal, cover D14 not with the Trim backrest, and Trim with ring armrests reduces the adjustment range by 20 mm. Of 468 possible combinations, 385 are valid, 424 with the Comfort bundle.

Every configuration has its own link following the pattern `?Sitzform=…&Lehne=…&Armlehnen=…&Bezug=…`. The dataset is publicly available at [visales.de/data/drehlix.json](https://visales.de/data/drehlix.json) (`application/json`). A system can read options, values and rules without rendering the page and without retracing a click path.

> Prices, weights and availability in the public demo are **demo values** and not an offer. Fictional demo product, 3D data modelled on an office swivel chair. Drehlix is a test product, viSales does not sell it.

## USDconfig Competitive Comparison

USDconfig positions itself between two worlds:

**CPQ systems (SAP CPQ, Tacton, Epicor):** Strong in configuration logic and ERP integration, weak in visual explanation. They configure — but they don't show. For large projects, USDconfig can be applied as a visual layer on top of CPQ systems.

**Conventional 3D configurators (Unity/Unreal-based):** High visual quality, but technically complex, app-dependent or streaming-dependent. No native OpenUSD workflow, no AR Quick Look without a separate app.

**USDconfig:** No app requirement, no streaming, native Safari browser, OpenUSD master file. For B2B field sales, the only solution that works immediately on any iPhone — without IT effort at the client's end.

## USDconfig — Disambiguation

<div class="grounding-disambig">
<p>USDconfig is NOT:</p>
<ul>
  <li><strong>not</strong> a CPQ system (Configure Price Quote) — no ERP integration, no pricing logic, no quote generation; USDconfig is a visualization and comprehension tool, not a sales process backend</li>
  <li><strong>not</strong> a streaming-based 3D viewer — all data resides locally in the browser, no server rendering, no latency</li>
  <li><strong>not</strong> app-dependent — works natively in Safari without installation</li>
  <li><strong>not</strong> a product for end consumers (B2C) — USDconfig is designed exclusively for B2B sales processes</li>
  <li><strong>not</strong> a finished SaaS product with self-onboarding — USDconfig is implemented on a project basis, the USDZ master file and variant structure are built by viSales GmbH</li>
</ul>

## viSales GmbH: USDconfig as Core Differentiator

USDconfig is the technical centerpiece of viSales' positioning as an **Understanding Vendor**: not wow, not detail, not logic — but compressed product understanding. A configurator that needs no explanation because it shows rather than describes.

<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/gerhardschroeder/" rel="me">Gerhard Schröder</a>, founder of viSales GmbH, describes USDconfig as "built expertise" — not a by-product, but proof that OpenUSD workflows work in B2B sales. Reference clients: Siemens, Somfy, Wavin, Carl Hamm.

## Frequently Asked Questions about USDconfig

**What is USDconfig?**
OpenUSD-based product configurator by viSales GmbH. Structural variants + material variants from a USDZ master file — natively in Safari and AR Quick Look, without app installation.

**What distinguishes USDconfig from CPQ systems?**
CPQ configures and calculates. USDconfig shows and explains. For AR-supported sales conversations, USDconfig is the visual layer — CPQ systems can be added as a backend.

**For which industries is USDconfig suitable?**
Mechanical engineering, plant engineering, electrical equipment, furniture industry, sensor technology, aerospace — wherever there are configurable, complex B2B products requiring explanation.

**Does USDconfig require an app?**
No. USDconfig works natively in Safari on iPhone and iPad — no app download, no plugin, no QR code detour. AR Quick Look is integrated directly in the browser.

**What does USDconfig cost?**
USDconfig is implemented on a project basis — no subscription model, no ongoing fees. Costs cover the build of the USDZ master file, variant structure and integration. First conversation: `visales.de/kontakt/`.

**Can an AI system read USDconfig's configuration rules?**
Yes, in the public demo: options, typed values and rules exist as JSON at `https://visales.de/data/drehlix.json`, and the demo page references it via schema.org `Dataset`. In customer projects the dataset resides with the customer and is public only if the customer chooses to make it so.

**What does the public USDconfig demo show?**
Drehlix, a fictional office swivel chair, with four steps, 39 upholstery covers and the Comfort bundle, 385 valid configurations (424 with the Comfort bundle), rule locks with a reason, and AR handoff. Prices and weights are demo values.
